EXERCISE 49

COST PRICE: The amount of money which you pay an article is called the cost price, written as C.P.

SELLING PRICE: The amount which you receive from the customer by selling an article is called the selling price, written as S.P.

(1) Find the profit of loss in each of the following cases:

(a) C.P. = Rs 150, S.P. = Rs 275

Ans: S.P. > C.P., so it is a profit.

Profit = S.P – C.P. = Rs 275 – Rs 150 = Rs 125

(b) C.P. = Rs 185.75, S.P. = Rs 172.50

Ans: C.P. > S.P., so it is a loss.

Loss = C.P. – S.P = Rs 185.75 – Rs 172.50 = Rs 13.25

(c) C.P. = Rs 200, S.P. = Rs 315.50

Ans: S.P. > C.P., so it is a profit.

Profit = S.P – C.P. = Rs 315.50 – Rs 200 = Rs 115.50

(d) C.P. = Rs 65.85, S.P. = Rs 55.25

Ans: C.P. > S.P., so it is a loss.

Loss = C.P. – S.P = Rs 65.85 – Rs 55.25 = Rs 10.60

(2) A shopkeeper bought a refrigerator for Rs 12,000 and sold it for Rs 13,510. Find his profit or loss.

Solution: S.P. > C.P., so it is a profit.

Profit = S.P – C.P. = Rs 13510 – Rs 12000 = Rs 1510

(3) Rachana bought a saree for Rs 1150 and sold it to her friend for Rs 1070. Find her profit or loss.

Solution: C.P. > S.P., so it is a loss.

Loss = C.P. – S.P = Rs 1150 – Rs 1070 = Rs 80

(4) A dealer bought 20 TV sets for Rs 3150 each, paid Rs 360 as the cartage for all and sold these at Rs 3500 each. Find his total profit or loss.

Solution: C.P. = Rs 3150, S.P. = Rs 3500

Cost of transportation = Rs 360

∴ Total Cost of Price = Rs 3150 + Rs 360 = Rs 3510

C.P. > S.P, so it is a loss.

Loss = C.P – S.P = Rs 3510 – Rs 3500 = Rs 10.

(5) A fruit vendor bought 10 kg of mangoes for Rs 350. He sold them at Rs 42 per kg How much profit did he make for 1 kg of mangoes?

Solution: C.P. of 10 kg mangoes = Rs 350

C.P. of 1 kg mangoes = Rs (350 ÷ 10) = Rs 35

Here, C.P. = Rs 35, S.P. = 42

S.P. > C.P., so it is a profit.

Profit = S.P – C.P. = Rs 42 – Rs 35 = Rs 7.

(6) Pens were purchased by a stationery shop owner at 100 pens for Rs 350. He sold them at 8 for Rs 40. Find the profit made on each pen.

(7) Fill in the blanks:

Solution: (a) 200 – (170 + 10) = 20

(b) 615 – (508 + 95) = 12

(c) (860 + 20) – 710 = 170

(d) (325 + 15) – 30 = 310

(e) (56.10 + 4.28) – 3.15 = 57.23

(f) (1600 + 18) + 162 = 1780

(g) 217.68 – (21.75 + 7.13) = 188.80

(8) A bicycle is sold for Rs 2140 by making a profit of Rs 153. Find the cost price of the bicycle.

Solution: The C.P. of the bicycle = Rs (2140 – 153) = Rs 1987

(9) The cost price of a chair is Rs 312 and is sold by making a profit of Rs 58. What is the selling price of the chair?

Solution: S.P. of the chair = Rs (312 + 58) = 370

(10) A book is bought for Rs 97.50 and sold by incurring a loss of Rs 12.35. Find the selling price of the book.

Solution: S.P. of book = Rs (97.50 – 12.35) = Rs 85.15

(11) The selling price of a fan is Rs 1875. Loss incurred is Rs 176. Find the cost price of the fan.

Solution: C.P. of the fan = Rs (1875 + 176) = Rs 2051

(12) Satpal bought an article for Rs 500 and sold it for Rs 550. Find his percentage profit.
