Solve the following word problems:

(1) Sonu bought a sharpener for Rs 8.75, an eraser for Rs 3.65 and a ball pen for Rs 6.25. How much did the three items cost altogether?

Ans: Cost of three items altogether = Rs (8.75 + 3.65 + 6.25) = Rs 18.65

(2) At the end of last month Kunal had Rs 76.35 in his savings – box. He saved Rs 28.75 during this month. How much money does he have now in his savings – box?

Ans: Amount of money in Kunal’s savings box = Rs (76.35 + 28.75) = Rs 105.10

(3) Sachion has Rs 83.80 with him. How much more money does he need to buy shoes worth Rs 151.20?

Ans: The required money = Rs (151.20 – 83.80) = Rs 67.40

(4) A notebook costs Rs 18.80 and a book costs Rs 81.35. Which is more costly and by how much?

Ans: The book is more costly by (Rs 81.35 – Rs 18.80) = Rs 62.55

(5) Raman went to the fruit market to buy fruits. He bought apples for Rs 68.70, oranges for Rs 37.80 and grapes for Rs 83.50. How much money dose he spend to buy all these fruits?

Ans: Total amount of all fruits = Rs (68.70 + 37.80 + 83.50) = Rs 190.00

(6) After spending Rs 17.75 on cold drink and biscuit Renu had Rs 12.25 left with her? How much money did she have at first?

Ans: The required money = Rs (17.75 + 12.25) = Rs 30.00

(7) Rajan bought medicines worth Rs 29.65, station worth Rs 19.90 and grocery worth Rs 24.85. If he had Rs 100 with him, how much money is left with him after paying for the above items?

Ans: The total amount of spending Rajan = Rs (29.65 + 19.90 + 24.85) = Rs 74.40

The required money after paying = Rs (100.00 – 74.40) = Rs 25.60

(8) Amit bought a shirt for Rs 283.65. If he had Rs 350 with him, how much money would be left with him after paying for the shirt?

Ans: The amount of money after paying for the shirt = Rs (350.00 – 283.65) = Rs 66.35

(9) Meera went to the market with Rs 510 in her purse. She purchased bangles for Rs 85.50, a table cloth for Rs 125.75, a frock for Rs 174.25 and a doll for Rs 47.80. How much money is left with her?

Ans: The total amount of all purchase things = Rs (85.50 + 125.75 + 174.25 + 47.80) = Rs 433.30

The required money left with Meera = Rs (510.00 – 433.30) = Rs 76.70

(10) Add Rs 53.25 to Rs 47.80 and subtract the sum from Rs 150.

Ans: Add = Rs (53.25 + 47.80) = Rs 101.05

Subtract = Rs (150.00 – 101.050 = Rs 48.95
