Solve the following word problems
(1) The population of village is 6025. The number of females in the village is 2876. Find the number of males in the village.
Solution: The number of males = 6025 – 2876 = 3149.
(2) Two candidates contested an election. 3250 votes were polled in all. If the winning candidate polled 1867 votes, how many votes were polled by the other candidate? Find the margin by which the victorious candidate won over the other candidate.
Solution: The other candidate polled = 3250 – 1867 = 1383 votes.
(3) Rahul earns Rs 5300 per month. He saves Rs 1475 per month. What is his monthly expenditure?
Solution: Monthly expenditure of Rahul = Rs (5300 – 1475) = Rs 3825.
(4) The speedometer of a car read 7314 kilometers at the beginning of journey and 8100 kilometres at the end of the journey. How many kilometers did the car travel?
Solution: The required distance = 8100 – 7314 = 786 kilometres.
(5) Three candidates contested an election. The total number of valid votes was 6512. If two of the candidates got 2786 and 1937 votes respectively, how many votes did the third candidates get?
Solution: Third candidate gets = 6512 – (2786 + 1937) = 6512 – 4723 = 1789 votes.
(6) 4305 cold drink bottles were loaded in a truck. Out of these bottles, 1296 were delivered in one shop and 1488 in another shop. How many bottles were left in the trunk?
Solution: The number of left bottles = 4305 – (1296 + 1488) = 4305 – 2784 = 1521.
(7) There are 7423 books in a library. If 1637 are on Science and 1918 books are on Mathematics, how many books are there on other subjects?
Solution: The required books of other subject,
= 7423 – (1637 + 1918) = 7423 – 3555 = 3868.
(8) Pooja had Rs 6835 in her bank account on 1st day of a month. She deposited Rs 1365 on 4th day and withdrew Rs 3595 on the last day of the month. What amount was there in her account after the withdrawal?
Solution: The required amount of Pooja’s account after the withdrawal ,
= Rs [(6835 + 1365) – 3595] = Rs [8200 – 3595]
= Rs 4605
