Solve the following word problems:

(1) A goods train is 163 metres long and a passenger train is 95 metres long. Which train is longer and by how much?

Ans: (163 – 95) m = 68 m long.

Hence, good train 68 m longer than passenger train.

(2) A piece of rope is cut into two pieces. The length of one piece is 8 m 67 cm and the length of the other piece is 6 m 28 cm. What was the length of the original piece?

Ans: (8 m 67 cm + 6 m 28 cm) = 14 m 95 cm

Hence, the length of the piece of rope is 14 m 95 cm.

(3) Three bags of rice weigh 48 kg 350g, 49 kg 250 g and 52 kg 50 g. Find their total weight.

Ans: (48 kg 350g + 49 kg 250 g + 52 kg 50 g) = 149 kg 650 g

Hence, the total weight is 149 kg 650 g.

(4) Gaurav weighs 60 kg 280 g. His sister Anu is lighter by 6 kg 195 g. What is Anu’s weight?

Ans: (60 kg 280 g – 6 kg 195 g) = 54 kg 85 g

Therefore, Anu’s weight is 54 kg 85 g.

(5) Kunal weighed 54 kg 600g. He reduced his weight. Now, he weighs 49 kg 450 g. How much weight has he lost?

Ans: (54 kg 600 g – 49 kg 450 g) = 5 kg 150g

Hence, Kunal lost 5 kg 150 g weight.

(6) A jug contained 437ml of milk. 175 ml of water is added to it. How much mixture is there in the jug now?

Ans: (437 + 175) ml = 612 ml

Hence, 612 ml mixture is there in the jug now.

(7) A tea-shop owner purchased 6 l 250 ml of milk from one vendor and 5 l 375 ml of milk from another vendor. What is the total quantity of milk purchased by him?

Ans: (6 l 250 ml + 5 l 375 ml) = 11 l 625 ml

Therefore, the total quantity of milk purchased is 11 l 625 ml.

(8) The capacity of tank is 800 litres. It contains 456 litres of water. How much more water it can hold?

Ans: (800 – 456) lit = 344 litres.

(9) A tin contained 14 l 600 ml of ghee. Due to a small leak in the bottom of the tin 1 l 225 ml of ghee was wasted. How much ghee is left in the tin?

Ans: (14 l 600 ml – 1 l 225 ml) = 13 l 375 ml

Therefore, 13 l 375 ml ghee is left in the tin.
