Solution: Arranging the number in ascending orders
6, 8, 9, 15, 16, 18, 21, 22, 25
Number of terms, n = 9; it is an odd number.
Median = (9+1)/2 th observation
Median = 5th observation
Median = 16
(iii) 21, 15, 6, 25, 18, 13, 20, 9, 16, 8, 22
Solution: Arranging the numbers in ascending order,
6, 8, 9, 13, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 25
Number of terms, n = 11; it is an odd number.
Median = (11+1)/2 th observation
Median = 6th observation
Median = 16

(5) Find the median of first 50 whole numbers.

(6) The marks of 15 students (out of 50) in an examination are
20, 22, 26, 31, 40, 19, 17, 19, 25, 29, 23, 17, 24, 21, 35
Find the median marks.

(7) The ages (in years) of 10 teachers in a school are
34, 37, 53, 46, 52, 43, 31, 36, 40, 50.
Find the median age.

(8) Find the median weight for the following data:
Weight (in kg) | 45 | 46 | 48 | 50 | 52 | 54 | 55 |
Number of boys | 8 | 5 | 6 | 9 | 7 | 4 | 2 |
Weight (in kg) (xi) | Number of boys (fi) | Cumulative frequency |
45 | 8 | 8 |
46 | 5 | 13 |
48 | 6 | 19 |
50 | 9 | 28 |
52 | 7 | 35 |
54 | 4 | 39 |
55 | 2 | 41 |
Number of terms, n = 41; which is an odd number.
Median = (41+1)/2 th observation
Median = 21th observation.
Median = 50 kg.
(9) Calculating the median for the following data:
Marks | 17 | 20 | 22 | 15 | 30 | 25 |
Number of students | 5 | 9 | 4 | 3 | 10 | 6 |
Marks (xi) | Number of students (fi) | Cumulative frequency |
17 | 5 | 5 |
20 | 9 | 14 |
22 | 4 | 18 |
15 | 3 | 21 |
30 | 10 | 31 |
25 | 6 | 37 |
Number of terms, n = 37; which is an odd number.
Median = (37+1)/2 th observation
Median = 19 th observation.
Median = 22
