Do as directed:

(1) Subtract the sum of 857 and 2639 from 7034.

Solution: sum of 857 and 2639 = (857 + 2639) = 3496

Now, 7034 – 3496 = 3538

(2) Subtract 3578 from the sum of 2694 and 5462.

Solution: Sum of 2694 and 5462 = (2694 + 5462) = 8156

Now, 8156 – 3578 = 4578

(3) Subtract the sum of 1295 and 1342 from the sum of 1986 and 4268.

Solution: Sum of 1986 and 4268 = 1986 + 4268 = 6254

Sum of 1295 and 1342 = 1295 + 1342 = 2637

Now, 6254 – 2637 = 3617

(4) Subtract 6666 from the sum of 1387, 4549 and 3426.

Solution: Sum of 1387, 4549 and 3426 = 1387 + 4549 + 3426 = 9362

Now, 9362 – 6666 = 2696

(5) Which is greater: (a) Sum of 2978 and 3539; or (b) Sum of 3747 and 2738 and by how much?

Solution: Sum of 2978 and 3539 = 2978 + 3539 = 6517

Sum of 3747 and 2738 = 3747 + 2738 = 6485

Clearly (a) > (b)

Now, 6517 – 6485 = 32
